CPD Connect: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - 9 week course

NHS staff currently report high levels of stress at work related to increasing workloads and demands and limited resources. Mindfulness is a healthy, sustainable way to manage stress.  Research suggests that mindfulness has a powerful and positive effect on health and well-being across a wide range of physical and mental health conditions.

What is mindfulness?
“Mindfulness is paying attention, on purpose, in a particular way, without judgment”. (Jon Kabat-Zinn)
Paying attention can help us become aware of our stress responses and tap into our inner resources to take better care of ourselves in terms of:
•         managing anxiety
•         sharpening focus
•         increasing productivity
•         improving sleep
•         relieving pain
•         feeling a deeper sense of calm
Course includes:
•         Introductory week followed by a further 8 weekly 2½ hour group sessions
•         learning mindfulness practices such as body scan, sitting with the breath and mindful movement
•         over the course of the 9 weeks core mindfulness skills are progressively developed
•         the course is experiential - based on skills development, group discussion and home-based practice
•         course manual and practice CDs for home use are provided

Each session starts promptly at 7pm and there is no facility to allow access for latecomers.  Please consider your travel time realistically before booking this course.

Leadership - A Taste of Leadership - Foundation Level Course

This course is ideally for GPs and Pharmacists early in their career who have not had any leadership development before.  A more advanced course is available for those who have had some previous leadership development.

This course will help you start your leadership development journey by highlighting personal leadership approaches.  The other one day course 'Develop Yourself, Others and Service' (SOS) will focus on your TEAMS and your role as a leader of/within a team.

For this course (TOL), there is some pre-work to help with the discussions on the day.  Please ensure that you listen to the recordings and can therefore participate in the discussion. There is also a Questback self-assessment to complete prior to the day.  You need to bring this with you as it will be the focus of a discussion.

An underpinning principle is that leadership, rather than being simply vested in a few formal leadership positions at the top of the hierarchy (King's Fund, 2014), it is distributed throughout the health and social care system at a variety of levels regardless of whether you lead a team or not.

The core content of this training session has been aligned to key reference documents e.g. VT Foundation Training framework.  For GPs the reference document is the 20:20 Vision/Realistic and the provision of integrated models of care.

Key reference sources for the development of the course have been:

A Prescription for Excellence
Collective Leadership (Michael West et al)
Typology of problems and followership (Keith Grint)
Emotional Intelligence and Leadership styles (Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis)
Team-based working and inter-team working (Michael West et al)

Advanced Leadership

*Course is provisional and will only run if 10 or more delegates are attending*

This course is for more experienced staff wishing to develop more advanced leadership skills.  A Foundation level course is available for those who have not had any leadership development.

Delegates need to attend all 5 days of this course.  Pre-work will be uploaded to the 'Documentation' tab for this course about 2-3 weeks prior to the course.  Please ensure that you download and complete the tasks for Day 1 prior to attending.

The aim of this 5 day course is to enable participants to test some key theories of leadership in the workplace.  This course is aimed at GPs and Pharmacists with more than 3 years post registration experience.  It is based on reflection and exploration of yourself as a leader.  The teaching style is discussion orientated with participants being expected to come equipped with experiences to share with the group.  Participants are expected to do some small tasks prior to and throughout the course, and report back on progress at each session.  As part of the course there are senior healthcare professionals who attend to share their experiences.  Please ensure that you come prepared to ask them questions.

All printed information for the course is available via the 'Documentation' tab.  Prior to Day 1 participants are expected to 'dip' into the reading list, reflect on their favourite leader and complete some tasks using the templates provided.  Other tasks include: reflection on a scenario with your team, reflection on a change management project that you have OBSERVED, reflection on a change management project that you have LED, reflection on a recent communication, reflection on 'chairing at/of meetings'.

For Day 5, participants are expected to share with the group a poster (template will be provided) that details the outcome of a short project that they have undertaken throughout the course.  The leadership skills developed as part of the project need to be clear within the poster.  Please note that the posters need to be emailed to NES Pharmacy for processing.  They will be enlarged and then printed ready to display at the session.  Participants may be asked for their permission to formally design and print their poster for display at a future conference should the topic be suitable for this purpose.  A poster that deals with sensitive information will not be used for this purpose.

Key topics covered in the course are: the dynamics of teams, how to chair effectively, communication for leadership, managing conflict, coaching vs mentoring, staff development, change management and how to negotiate effectively.
